Jaishankar Reaffirms India's Neutral Stance on Russia-Ukraine Conflict, Emphasizes Direct Negotiations

In a candid discussion at Chatham House in London, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s balanced approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, highlighting the country’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with both Moscow and Kyiv. While India has maintained regular communication with both parties, Jaishankar clarified that New Delhi has refrained from prescribing any specific framework for a peace settlement, insisting that direct negotiations between the two nations remain the best course of action.

Jaishankar’s remarks came during his six-day visit to the United Kingdom and Ireland, where he addressed a broad range of geopolitical issues, including India-China relations and the Kashmir dispute. Speaking on India's engagement in the Ukraine crisis, he stated, “We have been one of the few countries that have consistently maintained dialogue with both Moscow and Kyiv at various levels. My Prime Minister has been in direct contact with President Putin and President Zelenskyy.”

India’s Diplomatic Role in Conflict Resolution

Jaishankar underscored India’s active role in facilitating specific diplomatic efforts during key moments of the war. He cited India's involvement in negotiating the Black Sea Grain Corridor in 2022, where New Delhi played a behind-the-scenes role in addressing Russian hesitations after being approached by other nations, including Turkey.

Similarly, India engaged with both sides during the crisis at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, conveying critical messages between Ukrainian and Russian officials. “We were approached by the Ukrainians to pass on messages to the Russians, which we did. We also communicated back their response and collaborated with IAEA Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi on the matter,” he revealed.

Jaishankar emphasized that India's diplomatic efforts have largely taken place behind closed doors, allowing candid discussions with the leadership of both nations. However, he reiterated that India has refrained from imposing its views or drafting a peace proposal. “Our position has been consistent—both parties must engage in direct negotiations. We have never advised them on the format or terms of their discussions. That is for them to decide,” he asserted.

India’s Strategic Position Amid Global Shifts

In the broader geopolitical context, Jaishankar’s statements assume heightened significance amid escalating tensions between Ukraine and its Western allies. Notably, the growing rift between Kyiv and Washington—exacerbated by a public spat between President Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump—has led to a halt in U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

Addressing these developments, Jaishankar remarked that Trump’s policy shifts were not unexpected. “Much of what we have seen and heard in recent weeks was predictable. I am, in fact, surprised that others are surprised,” he noted. He further suggested that these geopolitical realignments could present strategic advantages for India, stating, “In many ways, I would say yes.”

Jaishankar’s remarks reaffirm India’s position as a pragmatic and independent global actor, emphasizing constructive diplomacy over prescriptive intervention. As the Russia-Ukraine war continues to shape global alliances, India’s approach remains centered on fostering dialogue while safeguarding its strategic interests.
