Nagpur, March 20, 2025: Authorities in Nagpur have intensified efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the recent violence that erupted in the city. As of Thursday, police officials confirmed the formation of 18 special teams to trace and arrest the accused.
Curfew Remains in Effect as 69 Arrested
A curfew remains imposed in multiple areas of Nagpur for the third consecutive day, following the unrest that broke out on March 17, 2025. So far, 69 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence, while 200 suspects have been identified through investigations. Authorities are also analyzing CCTV footage to identify another 1,000 potential suspects, a senior police official stated.
CCTV and Cyber Cell Assisting Investigation
Law enforcement agencies are leveraging CCTV footage and cyber cell expertise to track down those involved. Five First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered at the Ganeshpeth and Kotwali police stations, naming 200 individuals. Officials confirmed that additional suspects are being identified with the aid of video analysis.
Police Injuries and Riot Escalation
The violence, which escalated on Monday night (March 17, 2025), resulted in injuries to 33 police personnel, including three officers of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) rank. Mobs engaged in arson, vandalism, and stone-pelting, targeting police forces and private property. Petrol bombs were also hurled at security personnel.

Initial investigations suggest that the unrest was sparked by rumors regarding the burning of a chadar (a sacred cloth with religious inscriptions) during a protest led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). The demonstration was part of a campaign demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.

Amid the chaos, a disturbing incident was reported where rioters allegedly misbehaved with a woman constable and attempted to disrobe her, according to details mentioned in an FIR.
Nagpur Police Commissioner’s Statement
Addressing the media on Wednesday (March 19, 2025), Nagpur Commissioner of Police Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal confirmed that special teams deployed for the investigation include personnel from the Ganeshpeth, Kotwali, and Tehsil police stations, as well as officers from the Crime Branch.
