Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to the revered freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, who were executed by the British colonial authorities for their role in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. Their unwavering commitment to India's independence continues to serve as a beacon of inspiration for the nation.
These three revolutionaries stood united in their defiance against British rule. In April 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt orchestrated a symbolic protest by throwing a bomb in the Central Legislative Assembly—not with the intent to cause harm, but to draw attention to their cause. On March 23, 1931, Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were executed at the tender ages of 23, 22, and 24, respectively.
‘A Timeless Inspiration’
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi expressed his profound respect for the martyrs, stating:
" "Today, our nation remembers the supreme sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. Their fearless pursuit of freedom and justice continues to inspire us all."."
Shaheed Diwas: A Tribute to India’s Martyrs
Observed annually on March 23, Shaheed Diwas, or Martyrs' Day, commemorates the indomitable spirit of those who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom. Among them, Bhagat Singh remains a towering symbol of resistance and revolution, his legacy shaping generations of patriots.
The Historical Significance of Shaheed Diwas
Shaheed Diwas finds its origins in the valiant sacrifice of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, who played a pivotal role in India's struggle for independence. Their execution by the British authorities in 1931 marked a defining moment in the freedom movement, galvanizing the nation against colonial rule.
Bhagat Singh, revered as ‘Shaheed-e-Azam’ (Martyr of the Nation), was a charismatic revolutionary whose ideology and actions ignited a fervor for independence. Alongside his compatriots, he remains an enduring symbol of courage and defiance against oppression. Their sacrifices continue to inspire countless individuals in the ongoing pursuit of justice and national pride.
