Gir, Gujarat – Prime Minister Narendra Modi took on the role of a wildlife photographer on Monday morning as he embarked on a jungle safari at the Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat to mark World Wildlife Day 2025.
During the visit, the Prime Minister captured striking images of lions, lionesses, and cubs, which he later shared on social media. “Lions and lionesses in Gir! Tried my hand at some photography this morning,” he wrote on X, showcasing his close encounters with the majestic Asiatic Lions.
A Nostalgic Return to Gir
PM Modi reflected on his deep connection with Gir, recalling his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister and the conservation efforts undertaken to protect the Asiatic Lion. “Visiting Gir this morning brought back many memories of the collective work we did when I was serving as Gujarat CM. Over the years, dedicated efforts have ensured a steady rise in the Asiatic Lion population,” he wrote.
He also acknowledged the crucial role played by local tribal communities and women in safeguarding the lions' habitat. “Equally commendable is the role of tribal communities and women from surrounding areas in preserving the habitat of the Asiatic Lion,” he noted. India’s Commitment to Wildlife Conservation
Highlighting India’s success in wildlife preservation, the Prime Minister emphasized the increasing populations of several endangered species. “Over the last decade, the numbers of tigers, leopards, and rhinos have also risen, reflecting our deep commitment to wildlife conservation and sustainable habitat development,” he stated.
Located in Gujarat’s Talala Gir region, Gir National Park—also known as Sasan Gir—remains the last abode of the Asiatic Lion and is a key focus of India’s conservation initiatives.
A Call for Global Wildlife Protection
As part of his three-day visit to Gujarat, PM Modi also extended his wishes on World Wildlife Day, urging global efforts to protect biodiversity. “Today, on World Wildlife Day, let’s reiterate our commitment to safeguarding the incredible biodiversity of our planet. Every species plays a vital role—let’s protect their future for generations to come. India takes great pride in its contributions to wildlife conservation,” he wrote on X.
