Puducherry Government Mandates Tamil Signage for Shops and Announces ₹1,000 Crore Coastal Protection Plan

Puducherry, March 18, 2025 – Chief Minister N Rangasamy has announced that all shops and establishments in Puducherry must display their names in Tamil, emphasizing the government's commitment to preserving and promoting the language. Addressing the Assembly on Tuesday, Rangasamy stated that official circulars with strict instructions will be issued to ensure compliance.

The announcement came in response to a request by Independent MLA G Nehru, also known as Kuppusamy, during Zero Hour. Nehru urged the government to enforce the measure without exceptions, stressing the importance of honoring Tamil. The Chief Minister also revealed that invitations for all government functions would now include a Tamil version as a mark of respect for the language.

Meanwhile, during Question Hour, Public Works and Fisheries Minister K Lakshminarayanan outlined the government's strategy to combat sea erosion along Puducherry’s 24-km coastline. The project, estimated to cost ₹1,000 crore, involves placing boulders along the shore. Lakshminarayanan expressed confidence that central government funding would support the initiative, ensuring long-term coastal protection.

These initiatives reflect the Puducherry government’s broader efforts to strengthen regional identity and address critical environmental challenges.
