Istanbul, March 25, 2025 – Ten Turkish journalists, including a photographer from Agence France-Presse (AFP), were arrested on Monday in Istanbul and Izmir, according to the Turkish human rights association MLSA. The arrests come amid ongoing protests following the detention of opposition Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was incarcerated on Sunday.
Growing Calls for Protests
Public outrage continues to escalate in Turkey, with fresh calls for nationwide protests on Monday evening, marking the sixth consecutive day of demonstrations against Imamoglu’s imprisonment. The Istanbul mayor, a key opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, spent his first night behind bars in Silivri prison, located in western Istanbul.
Imamoglu Named Presidential Candidate for 2028 Elections
Despite his arrest and suspension from office, Imamoglu has been formally nominated by his party as a candidate for the 2028 presidential election. The move underscores his continued political influence and the opposition’s determination to challenge Erdogan’s leadership.
International Condemnation
The arrest and imprisonment of Imamoglu have sparked strong international condemnation. The French Foreign Ministry denounced the decision as a “serious attack on democracy.”
Meanwhile, Marc Cools, President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, has called for Imamoglu’s “immediate release,” describing his detention as a “calculated maneuver” that undermines the fairness of electoral processes in Turkey.
As tensions mount, Turkey braces for further political unrest, with the opposition and international community keeping a close watch on developments.
