Gaza City/Amman – Twenty-nine injured Palestinian children from Gaza have been medically evacuated to Jordan to receive critical treatment, as the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn region deepens. Many of these children have suffered life-altering injuries, including lost limbs, blindness, and severe internal wounds, as a result of ongoing Israeli airstrikes.
A Journey of Pain and Hope
The first group of children left from Khan Younis in southern Gaza, traveling in a convoy escorted by the United Nations’ World Health Organization (WHO). The evacuation was an emotional moment for families, who bid tearful goodbyes as their children were taken across the border in the hopes of receiving lifesaving care.
Among them was a 9-year-old boy, Muhammad’s son, who was maimed after mistaking a detonator for a toy. The device exploded, injuring him and seven others. Shrapnel struck his eyes, causing severe damage. “They didn’t know what it was,” his father recounted in anguish.
Another young victim, an 11-year-old, had gone to fetch a warm drink when he was caught in an airstrike. His father found him outside, his leg amputated by the blast. “We rushed him to the Red Cross, where they treated him,” he said, his voice filled with grief.
Thousands More Await Evacuation
Jordan has pledged to take in 2,000 children for specialized medical care, but the WHO warns that as many as 14,000 injured Palestinian children still require urgent evacuation. Medical facilities in Gaza are overwhelmed, struggling with dwindling supplies and the constant influx of casualties.
For many children, the delay in treatment has had devastating consequences. Iham, a young boy who was blinded by an airstrike while waiting in line for bread, could have retained his vision if he had received immediate medical attention. “The shrapnel penetrated his eye, causing internal bleeding. Now, his condition has worsened, and the eye will have to be drained,” his mother explained.
A Future Beyond War?
Despite their suffering, many of these children hold onto hope. Their small bodies bear the scars of war, but their eyes still look toward a future beyond the destruction. As they arrive in Jordan, doctors will do their best to heal their wounds—both physical and emotional.
But for the thousands still trapped in Gaza, the nightmare continues. Without immediate international intervention, their chances of survival grow slimmer each day.
As the war rages on, the world watches. Will these children be given a chance at life, or will they become yet another statistic in the mounting toll of Gaza’s suffering?
