Lucknow, March 24, 2025 – Once regarded as a BIMARU (lagging) state, Uttar Pradesh has now positioned itself as India’s engine of economic growth, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath declared on Monday.
Speaking on the state’s transformation, Adityanath recalled that before 2017, Uttar Pradesh was considered economically stagnant, struggling across multiple sectors. However, in the last eight years, the state has undergone a remarkable turnaround, emerging as a key driver of the nation’s economy.
Agricultural Reforms: A Game Changer
Highlighting agriculture as a major success story, the Chief Minister noted that prior to 2017, the sector had been neglected, leaving farmers in distress. However, under the "double-engine government", Uttar Pradesh saw sweeping reforms that significantly boosted agricultural productivity.
The state's agricultural growth rate, which stood at approximately 5% in 2016-17, has now surged to over 13.5%, marking a dramatic improvement.
Loan Waivers and Increased Food Production
Adityanath credited the state’s economic revival to his government’s first cabinet decision—a ₹36,000 crore farm loan waiver. This initiative provided much-needed relief to farmers and laid the foundation for sustained growth in the agricultural sector.
As a result, food grain production, which was 557 lakh metric tonnes in 2016-17, has now surpassed 668 lakh metric tonnes, reflecting a nearly 20% increase.
A Model of Economic Transformation
With Uttar Pradesh now leading across multiple sectors, Adityanath underscored the state’s potential to shape India's economic future. The transformation, he asserted, is a testament to effective governance, policy reforms, and strategic investments aimed at fostering sustainable growth.
