Mumbai, April 22, 2025 — Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has issued a formal apology following widespread criticism over his recent comment targeting the Brahmin community. The controversy arose after Kashyap responded to a social media provocation with language deemed offensive, which he later admitted was made in a moment of anger.
The uproar began in the wake of objections from members of the Brahmin community regarding the portrayal of their identity in Kashyap’s upcoming film Phule. Matters escalated when the filmmaker posted a response via Instagram Stories, which quickly went viral and triggered a wave of backlash from various quarters, including socio-cultural organisations and prominent voices on social media.
Realising the gravity of the situation, Kashyap took to Instagram once again—this time to offer a heartfelt apology.
"Main gusse mein kisi ko ek jawab dene mein apni maryada bhool gaya. Aur poore Brahmin samaj ko bura bol daala. Wo samaj jiske tamaam log meri zindagi mein rahe hain, aaj bhi hain aur bahut contribute karte hain. Aaj wo sab mujhse aahat hain. Mera parivaar mujhse aahat hai. Bahut saare buddhijeevi, jin ki main izzat karta hoon, mere us gusse mein, mere bolne ke tareeke se aahat hain," Kashyap wrote.
"Maine khud hi aisi baat karke, apni hi baat ko mudde se bhatka diya. Main tahe dil se maafi maangta hoon, is samaj se jinko main ye nahi kehna chaah raha tha, lekin aavesh mein kisi ki ghatiya tipanni ka jawab dete hue likh diya."
In a continued statement, he added:
"Main maafi maangta hoon apne un tamaam sahyogi doston se, apne parivaar se aur us samaj se, apne bolne ke tareeke ke liye, abhadra bhasha ke liye. Ab aage se aisa na ho, main us par kaam karoonga. Apne gusse par kaam karoonga. Aur mudde ki baat agar karni ho to sahi shabdon ka istemal karoonga. Asha hai aap mujhe maaf kar denge."
The Triggering Incident
The controversy was sparked when Kashyap responded to a social media user who commented, “Brahmins tumhare baap hain...” To this, Kashyap replied, “Brahmin pe main mootoonga… koi problem?” The remark, though made in retaliation, was met with intense outrage from multiple Brahmin organisations and cultural bodies, who demanded a public retraction and apology.
As the backlash gained momentum, the filmmaker's apology appears to be a conciliatory step to mend ties with the affected community and reaffirm his respect for all social groups.
Anurag Kashyap, known for his outspoken views and provocative filmmaking, has often found himself at the centre of social and political debates. However, this incident marks a rare moment of public contrition from the director, who has acknowledged the need for measured discourse and accountability in the digital age.
