RISHRA: Amid mounting anxiety and a lack of clear information from senior officials, Rajani Shaw, the pregnant wife of BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, announced her decision to travel to Firozpur via Pathankot on Sunday aboard the Amritsar Mail in search of answers regarding her husband's detention.
Purnam Kumar Shaw was taken into custody by Pakistan Rangers on Wednesday after inadvertently crossing the border while on duty. Despite initial attempts by the commanding officer to dissuade Rajani from undertaking the journey — citing ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure his release — she was eventually granted permission to proceed. She will be accompanied by her two sisters and a cousin brother.
"I cannot sit and wait here till eternity. I have not heard from him for over 72 hours now. If I don't get help there, I will go to Delhi and seek answers from the PMO," Rajani stated, her voice reflecting deep concern. Her fears intensified after Pakistan authorities released a photograph showing Purnam blindfolded.
Purnam's mother, Devanti Devi, also expressed her anguish, saying, "I just want my son to return safely."
On Saturday, officials from Nabanna, alongside Rishra Municipality Chairman Bijoy Sagar Mishra, visited the Shaw residence to reassure the family. They affirmed that the state government would continue to actively pursue the matter with the Centre.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee took to X to inform the public that he had spoken with the Director General of the Border Security Force, who assured him that Purnam was currently safe and in good health.
As diplomatic efforts intensify, the Shaw family — and indeed the nation — await a swift and positive resolution.
