Pakistan Army Chief Reaffirms Two-Nation Theory, Urges Diaspora to Preserve National Identity

Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, invoked the two-nation theory during a recent address at the Overseas Pakistanis Convention in Islamabad, emphasizing the ideological and cultural distinctions between Pakistan and India. His remarks come at a time of heightened national discourse around identity, unity, and the country’s founding principles.

Speaking to members of the Pakistani diaspora, Munir urged expatriates to preserve and pass on the narrative of Pakistan’s formation to future generations. “You must tell the story of Pakistan to your children so that it is never forgotten,” he said. “Our forefathers believed we were fundamentally different from Hindus in every aspect—religion, customs, traditions, thought, and ambition. That belief laid the foundation of the two-nation theory.”

Reiterating the ideological basis of the nation’s creation in 1947, Munir stated, “We are two nations, not one. It was this realization that led our forebears to wage a determined struggle for an independent homeland. Their sacrifices were immense, and we, too, have paid a heavy price to secure and preserve Pakistan. And we know how to defend it.”

Addressing the audience with a message of continuity, Munir called on overseas Pakistanis to instill a strong sense of national identity in their children and grandchildren. “Whether it is the third, fourth, or fifth generation, they must know what Pakistan means to them. This bond must never weaken,” he said.

Turning to matters of national security, the army chief reaffirmed the military’s resolve to eliminate terrorism, particularly in Balochistan. He described the province as central to Pakistan’s destiny, asserting, “Even ten generations of terrorists cannot harm Balochistan or Pakistan.”

General Munir also lauded the contributions of overseas Pakistanis, acknowledging their unwavering dedication to the nation’s progress and stability.

In a broader message of solidarity, Munir extended support to Palestinians affected by ongoing conflict in Gaza. Citing Pakistani media reports, including Dawn, news agency ANI noted Munir’s remarks: “The hearts of Pakistanis beat in unison with the Muslims of Gaza.”

The army chief’s comments reflect the military’s continued emphasis on ideological unity, national security, and transnational solidarity, especially at a time of evolving geopolitical challenges.
