New Delhi, April 7 — Last season’s finalists, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), find themselves in unfamiliar territory at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table, with just a solitary win from five matches. The team, once known for its fearless and aggressive batting approach, has faltered this season as rivals appear better equipped to counter their tactics.
In the wake of SRH’s fourth consecutive defeat, head coach Daniel Vettori offered a candid assessment of the team’s performance, expressing concern over their lack of intensity across departments—particularly in the field.
“We just haven't been near our best in any of the last four games. And I think that's across all three disciplines,” said Vettori at the post-match press conference. “The barometer of most teams is how their fielding is going—and we've been pretty poor in the field. That’s definitely an area we need to work on ahead of the next game against Punjab.”
SRH’s success last season was built on the explosive form of openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, whose aggressive starts regularly gave the team early momentum. However, both batters have found the going tougher this year, as opposition bowlers appear to have cracked the code with better planning and execution.
Ishan Kishan, who opened the tournament with a century, has also struggled to maintain consistency since then.
Reflecting on their latest loss, Vettori pointed to pitch conditions and lack of adaptability as key issues. “The big thing for us is assessing conditions. Tonight was not a typical Hyderabad wicket—it was slow, and we knew that 160–170 was the par score,” he noted. “I thought Ishan navigated the powerplay quite well, but overall, we need to respect the conditions more and execute better.”
The coach also credited opposition teams for effectively targeting SRH’s top order. “Other teams are bowling really well, with clear plans for our top three. They’ve executed those plans with precision, and we haven’t responded the way we should.”
As SRH prepare to face Punjab in their next fixture, the focus is on regrouping and regaining momentum. “We know that if we can get on a roll, we’re still a very good team,” Vettori asserted. “But we’re simply not performing to our potential.”
