Sada, Yemen, April 30, 2025 – A U.S. airstrike targeting Houthi positions devastated a migrant detention center in the Houthi stronghold of Sada, killing at least 68 people, according to Houthi reports. The strike, part of a 43-day U.S. campaign dubbed Operation Rough Rider, aims to neutralize threats to Red Sea and Gulf of Aden shipping routes. The facility primarily housed African migrants from Ethiopia and Somalia, with the Houthi-controlled Interior Ministry reporting 115 detainees at the time of the attack.
Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene, with one Yemeni citizen accusing American forces of targeting “defenseless prisoners,” many still trapped under rubble. Hospital staff in Sada are conducting emergency surgeries, treating cases ranging from moderate to critical. U.S. Central Command has remained reticent, acknowledging over 800 targets struck since mid-March, resulting in more than 250 deaths, but offering no specifics on this incident. The Houthis, backed by Iran, have downed seven U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drones since the campaign began.
