As geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan continue to escalate, renowned playback singer Adnan Sami has shared a personal encounter that highlights growing disillusionment among Pakistani youth. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sami recounted a conversation he had with a group of young Pakistanis during a recent visit to Baku, Azerbaijan.
“Met some very sweet Pakistani boys while walking on the beautiful streets of Baku, Azerbaijan… They said, ‘Sir, you are very lucky. You left Pakistan in good time. We also want to change our citizenship… WE HATE OUR ARMY… They have destroyed our country!’ I replied, ‘I knew this long ago!’” Sami wrote.
The acclaimed singer, who once held Pakistani citizenship, moved to India in 2001 and was granted Indian citizenship in 2016. He has been vocal about his admiration for India and its cultural landscape, frequently expressing gratitude for the opportunities he has received since relocating.
Responding to a question on X from a Pakistani user asking what his next destination would be if conflict were to break out between India and Pakistan, Sami replied succinctly: “I’m extremely happy in India.”
Adnan Sami's move to India and subsequent naturalization has been a subject of public debate, particularly in Pakistan, where his citizenship change has drawn criticism from some quarters. Despite this, Sami has remained firm in his stance and continued to celebrate his Indian identity.
In 2021, he was honoured with the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, in recognition of his contributions to the field of arts and music. He has also faced online backlash in recent weeks after India issued advisories to individuals holding Pakistani visas following the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.
The artist also clashed with Pakistan’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry on X, following comments questioning Sami's Indian citizenship. The exchange came in the wake of heightened diplomatic strain after the terror incident in Jammu and Kashmir.
Despite these tensions, Sami has maintained his position. His latest comments reflect both his enduring criticism of Pakistan’s military establishment and his personal contentment with the life and recognition he has received in India.
