Sri Muktsar Sahib, Punjab – May 30, 2025 — A devastating explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Sri Muktsar Sahib district on Friday claimed the lives of at least five individuals and left nearly 25 others injured. The incident occurred at a two-storey factory situated along the Singhawali-Kotli road, leading to the complete collapse of the building and trapping several workers under the debris.
Emergency response teams, including police personnel and local administrative officials, arrived promptly at the site following the blast. A large-scale rescue operation was immediately launched to retrieve those trapped beneath the rubble.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jaspal Singh (Lambi division), confirmed that the cause of the explosion remains under investigation. He stated that efforts are ongoing to secure the site and ensure medical assistance for the injured.
The injured victims were rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bathinda, where they are currently receiving treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased pending notification of their families.
This incident adds to a troubling trend of fire-related accidents in the country. Earlier this week, in a separate case, a family of four sustained severe burn injuries in Pune after a suspected gas leak triggered an explosion in their residence. According to local officials, the blast occurred in the Wadkar Mala locality, where the family resided in a single-room dwelling.
Preliminary reports indicate that a loose stove knob may have caused a buildup of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). When the stove was ignited in the morning, the accumulated gas led to an explosion and subsequent fire. All family members, including two children, were reported to be in critical condition.
Authorities in both cases have urged residents and businesses to adhere strictly to safety protocols and regulatory guidelines, particularly in the handling of flammable substances.
Further investigations are underway, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
