Dublin— A Wicklow man who brutally murdered his wife by stabbing her 14 times on Christmas Eve, then recorded her final moments on his mobile phone, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Central Criminal Court.
Mr Justice Tony Hunt, delivering the sentence to 45-year-old Bahaalddin Alshwawrah, described the case as one of devastating violence and loss. “It’s hard to see what can be salvaged from this wreckage,” the judge remarked. “I wish the family well in trying to put this behind them and move forward in life.”
Alshwawrah, of Park Na Sillogue Court in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, pleaded guilty to the murder of his wife, 42-year-old Zeinat Bashabsheh, at their shared residence on December 24, 2021.
Detective Sergeant Gerard Brennan confirmed to prosecuting counsel Ronan Kennedy SC that the case had initially been scheduled for trial on May 12, 2025. However, the accused entered a guilty plea in April.
The court heard that Alshwawrah and Ms Bashabsheh met online before she travelled to Jordan to meet him in person. The couple later married and settled in Ireland, where they had three children. Ms Bashabsheh also had two children from a previous relationship.
On the night of the murder, Alshwawrah reportedly accused his wife of infidelity. He then stabbed her 14 times and recorded her on his phone as she lay dying. Immediately after the incident, he approached a neighbour's home, banging on the window and declaring that he had killed his wife. He then returned calmly to his own house and made a phone call.
The case has shocked the local community and sparked renewed conversations around domestic violence and coercive control in intimate relationships.
Alshwawrah will serve a mandatory life sentence
