Paris, May 3 — A man was shot and seriously injured during a police intervention in Drancy, Seine-Saint-Denis, on the evening of Friday, May 2, during a routine operation targeting illegal street rodeos. Authorities confirmed that while the man remains in critical condition, his life is not in danger. The incident, which also left a police officer injured, is now under judicial investigation.
According to the Paris police prefecture, officers were conducting a traffic stop involving a two-wheeler in the Youri-Gagarine housing estate as part of a broader effort to combat urban rodeos. The situation quickly escalated when a hostile crowd surrounded the officers, throwing projectiles and creating a volatile atmosphere. The officers found themselves isolated and under increasing threat.
Video footage circulating on social media shows a confrontation involving two police officers and several individuals around a fallen electric-blue motocross bike. In the footage, one officer is seen holding his service weapon and firing warning shots. He is then pushed by a man in a red sweater—believed to be the individual who was later shot. The footage captures multiple gunshots and verbal abuse directed at the police by bystanders. One officer is seen falling to the ground, clutching his arm, while the man in red disappears from view.
Police officials stated that one of the officers discharged his firearm multiple times into the air to defend himself and disperse the crowd, which continued its aggression despite the warning shots. During the incident, the officer in question shot and injured one assailant. Emergency services transported the man to hospital in a condition described as "critical but stable," with no life-threatening prognosis.
The officer who fell during the altercation sustained a back injury and was also hospitalized. Additional officers who arrived at the scene reportedly came under attack by mortar fire. Police later arrested three individuals for offenses including public disorder and resisting arrest.
Axel Ronde, spokesperson for the CFTC Police union, told BFMTV that officers had successfully apprehended one suspect and had intended to recover the motorbike as part of the investigation when “a group of 10 to 15 individuals attempted to seize the vehicle by force.”
By midnight, calm had returned to the area, although a significant police presence remained. The city of Drancy has deployed street mediators, and a local district official visited the site following the events, according to Le Parisien.
The incident has prompted a wave of political responses. Drancy mayor Aude Lagarde urged residents to avoid further unrest: “This emotion must not lead to endangering the neighborhood or our young people,” she said on social media. She called on parents to take an active role in preventing additional disturbances.
Paris Police Chief Laurent Nuñez also issued a statement, declaring: “Nothing justifies responding with violence to a police check. The judiciary will shed full light on the conditions under which my officers had to defend themselves.”
Meanwhile, Éric Ciotti, MP for Alpes-Maritimes and ally of the far-right National Rally, expressed his support for the police, posting on X: “Full support to the officers savagely attacked in Drancy.”
The investigation continues as judicial authorities work to clarify the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
