Minister's Controversial Remarks Spark Debate Amid Escalating India-Pakistan Tensions Following Pahalgam Attack

Bengaluru — Karnataka Housing and Minorities Welfare Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan has drawn sharp public attention and sparked political debate following inflammatory remarks made during a press interaction on Friday. Against the backdrop of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan after the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, Khan declared his willingness to personally take the fight to Pakistan—even suggesting he would carry out a suicide mission if authorised by national leadership.

"Pakistan has always acted as an adversary to India," Khan said. "If Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah permit me, I am ready to go to war with Pakistan." The minister went further, stating, "Give me a suicide bomb and I will tie it to myself and go attack them."

Khan made the statements while condemning the Pahalgam terrorist attack, describing it as a “heinous and inhuman act” against innocent civilians. He called for national unity and urged the central government to take decisive steps to bolster India’s internal and border security.

The remarks, while made in the context of strong national sentiment, have drawn criticism from several quarters for their provocative tone, raising questions about the responsibility and rhetoric of public representatives during times of national crisis.

The April 22 attack in Pahalgam, one of the deadliest in recent years, left at least 26 people dead, including foreign tourists. According to investigation sources, terrorists associated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba-linked group The Resistance Front (TRF) targeted a group of Hindu tourists after reportedly conducting reconnaissance earlier in the month. Survivors say the attackers forced victims to recite religious verses and subjected them to religious identification before executing them. A local pony operator who attempted to intervene was also killed.

In the wake of the assault, India undertook a series of retaliatory diplomatic and economic measures against Pakistan. These included suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, reducing Islamabad’s diplomatic presence in New Delhi, revoking airspace access to Pakistani carriers, and expelling military attachés. Pakistan, in turn, suspended bilateral trade and closed its airspace to Indian flights.

As the region grapples with the aftermath of the attack, political leaders and civil society across India continue to call for solidarity and a measured but firm response to terror threats. Meanwhile, Minister Khan’s remarks are expected to be subject to political scrutiny and public debate in the days ahead.
