Shirgaon, Goa — A tragic stampede during the annual Devi Lairai Jatra in Shirgaon village early Saturday morning resulted in the loss of at least seven lives and left more than 50 people injured. The centuries-old festival, held in honour of Goddess Lairai, draws thousands of devotees each year, culminating in a ritual where barefoot ‘dhonds’ walk across burning embers.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred when a segment of the crowd lost control along a downward slope of the procession route, leading to a sudden surge in movement. The rapid crowd flow caused panic and led to a deadly stampede. Onlookers, along with local volunteers, made valiant efforts to pull people to safety amidst the chaos.
Authorities responded swiftly, and rescue operations were launched immediately to assist the injured and restore order at the site. The situation is currently under close monitoring by local administration.
Leaders Express Condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his sorrow over the incident. In a message shared on social media platform X, he stated:
“Saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede in Shirgao, Goa. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected.”
Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant visited the hospital to meet those injured in the incident and assured them of full government support.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic stampede at the Lairai Zatra in Shirgaon this morning,” he posted on X. “I have assured all possible support to the affected families and am personally monitoring the situation. Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji spoke with me and took detailed stock of the situation, offering his full support.”

An investigation into the circumstances leading to the stampede has been initiated. Questions are being raised about crowd management measures in place during such a high-profile event. Meanwhile, the state government has pledged to provide compensation and medical assistance to the victims and their families.
