In a significant escalation of cross-border hostilities, Ukraine launched a large-scale drone offensive targeting Moscow and surrounding areas late Tuesday night, prompting air defense responses, flight disruptions, and structural damage across the region.
According to Russian authorities, air defense systems intercepted a total of 42 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the Moscow region, with 296 drones downed across various parts of Russia during the night. No casualties have been reported.
Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov confirmed that drones were neutralized over 12 municipalities, with three residential properties in the village of Troitskoye, located in the Chekhov district south of the capital, sustaining damage. Emergency services were deployed to the scene, and affected residents are reportedly receiving state assistance.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that the drone incursion occurred in multiple waves, beginning shortly after 12:30 a.m. local time. Videos circulated on social media platforms captured low-flying drones and explosions in various districts, including Zelenograd, where an explosion shattered windows at the Elma Technopark, and ignited a vehicle nearby.
Russian airspace authorities implemented temporary restrictions at major Moscow airports—Domodedovo, Vnukovo, Zhukovsky, and Sheremetyevo—as well as at regional airports in Vladimir, Ivanovo, Kostroma, and Yaroslavl to ensure civilian safety. Normal operations resumed later Wednesday morning.
Footage shared by local media outlets, including Shot and Baza, depicted UAVs being destroyed midair and residents taking cover in suburban districts such as Ramenskoye, underscoring the growing reach and psychological impact of Ukraine's drone campaign.
Intensification of Cross-Border Strikes
This latest drone offensive is part of what appears to be a broader escalation by Kyiv, targeting infrastructure and urban centers deep within Russian territory. The Russian Ministry of Defense has alleged that these attacks are being orchestrated with the support of Ukraine's European allies, and are designed to undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts toward a ceasefire.
Over the past week, Russia claims to have intercepted more than 2,300 drones, predominantly outside of frontline areas.
In response, Moscow has launched a series of what it characterizes as precision strikes against Ukrainian military assets, including drone production facilities, logistics hubs, radar systems, and ammunition depots. The Russian government maintains that these retaliatory operations are focused solely on military targets.
As drone warfare increasingly shapes the dynamics of the Ukraine conflict, the security of civilian populations and critical infrastructure on both sides of the border remains under acute threat. The latest exchanges signal a deepening of hostilities at a time when international observers continue to call for de-escalation and renewed diplomatic engagement.
