The 40th anniversary of the Air India disaster is being commemorated in Cork, Ireland today. A memorial service is being held in west Cork to mark the 40th anniversary of the Air India plane crash.
Many relatives of the deceased will gather at the memorial to pay their respects. The families of the victims will be joined by Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin, senior ministers from Canada and India, and the ambassadors of both countries to Ireland.
Shri Akhilesh Mishra, India's Ambassador-designate to Ireland, received Shri Hardeep Singh Puri.
He will then speak to people from various states of India at an event organized by the Indian Embassy under his chairmanship.

On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182, en route from Montreal to New Delhi, was hit by a bomb while flying off the southwest coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people on board.
Many of their relatives have travelled to the village of Ahakista, near Bantry, to pay their respects. The village is the closest landmass to the site of the plane crash.

This year, the 40th anniversary of the worst aviation disaster in Irish and Canadian history, around 60 families of the victims are expected to attend the annual commemoration ceremony, which will begin with a minute's silence at 8.13am, the exact time the bomb planted by Sikh militants exploded.
Many who took part in the largest search and recovery operation Ireland has ever undertaken are attending the ceremony to pay their respects.
