Bengaluru Stampede: Compensation Raised to ₹25 Lakh as FIRs Filed and Officials Removed Amid Mounting Criticism

In the wake of the tragic stampede outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday announced an increase in compensation for the families of the deceased, raising the ex gratia amount from ₹10 lakh to ₹25 lakh. The announcement comes amid widespread public outcry over the apparent safety failures at the event.

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday evening, when thousands gathered for a felicitation programme hosted by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to mark their maiden IPL title victory. As the crowd surged beyond safe limits, inadequate crowd control measures led to a stampede that claimed 11 lives and left several injured.

In response, the Karnataka Police registered an FIR on Thursday, naming key personnel from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), RCB officials, and DNA Entertainment Networks, the event management firm. Charges include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Taking suo motu cognisance, the Karnataka High Court issued a notice to the state government, seeking a detailed status report on the incident. The matter is listed for hearing on June 10.

Amid escalating political and public pressure, the Congress-led state government has initiated disciplinary action, suspending five senior police officers, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner. Others suspended include the Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP - Central Division), Cubbon Park Station House Officer (SHO), and the stadium in-charge.

In further administrative reshuffling, K Govindaraj, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, and Hemant Nimbalkar, head of the Department of Information and Public Relations, have been relieved of their duties.

The tragedy has triggered calls for comprehensive accountability and a reassessment of public event protocols in the state.
