Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand | June 26, 2025 — A tragic accident occurred on Thursday in the Gholtir area of Rudraprayag district, where a passenger bus veered off the Badrinath National Highway and plunged into the Alaknanda River. The incident involved an 18-seater vehicle reportedly carrying 18 to 19 passengers.
Emergency teams, including personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police, were swiftly deployed to the scene and are actively engaged in rescue and relief operations.
According to preliminary findings, the bus was navigating an uphill stretch when the driver allegedly lost control, leading to the vehicle’s fall into the river gorge. Garhwal Divisional Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey confirmed the casualties.
“One person has lost their life, and seven others have sustained injuries after the bus fell into the Alaknanda River in the Gholtir area. Rescue efforts are ongoing with the combined support of SDRF, police, and district administration teams,” Pandey stated.
Among the injured are two nine-year-old children. Medical aid is being administered, and efforts are underway to ascertain the condition of the remaining passengers.
Authorities are expected to launch a detailed inquiry into the cause of the accident. Meanwhile, traffic on the affected stretch of the highway remains partially disrupted.
