Kolkata, June 29: The Kolkata Police on Saturday confirmed that CCTV footage obtained from South Calcutta Law College supports the serious allegations of gangrape made by a 24-year-old female student. The footage, spanning over seven hours, reportedly captures key moments linked to the incident, including the forced confinement and subsequent assault of the complainant.
According to a report by news agency PTI, the surveillance footage, recorded between 3:30 PM and 10:50 PM on June 25, shows the movements of the victim and the three accused around the college premises. A senior investigating officer stated, “The CCTV footage confirms the girl’s allegations. It shows the movements of the accused, the victim, and the security guard. We are still examining the footage in detail.”
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the case: 31-year-old Manojit Mishra, an alumnus of the college and currently a practising lawyer; two current students, identified as 19-year-old Zaib Ahmed and 20-year-old Pramit Mukhopadhyay; and a campus security guard.
Investigators have collected forensic evidence from three critical locations on campus — the students’ union room, a washroom, and the guard’s room — all of which align with the complainant’s version of events. Items seized from these locations include strands of hair, multiple bottles containing unidentified liquids, and a hockey stick allegedly used to intimidate the victim.
“There are clear indications of a struggle in all three rooms,” a police official confirmed. “The samples have been sent for forensic testing to strengthen the case.”
The victim has alleged that the accused threatened her with a hockey stick during the assault. Police have also recovered a 1.5-minute video clip from the mobile phone of the main accused. A forensic analysis is currently underway to ascertain whether the clip was shared or deleted.
In response to the gravity of the case, the Kolkata Police has constituted a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (South Suburban Division), Pradip Ghoshal. The SIT is expected to record in-camera statements from the victim and her family.
Authorities are also probing the possibility of premeditation. “Based on the sequence of events and initial findings, it appears the prime accused may have assaulted the victim in retaliation after she rejected a marriage proposal,” an officer familiar with the investigation said, citing corroborative circumstantial evidence.
The incident has sparked outrage and renewed focus on campus safety and institutional accountability. Investigations remain ongoing.
