UFC star Conor McGregor and Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham have engaged in a heated social media exchange following the Israeli interception of an aid vessel en route to Gaza.
The vessel, Madleen, operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, was reportedly intercepted by Israeli forces in the early hours of Monday. Onboard were 12 international activists, including prominent climate campaigner Greta Thunberg. The ship was carrying humanitarian aid intended for the besieged Gaza Strip and was part of a broader effort to raise global awareness of the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.
Liam Cunningham condemned the seizure, stating:
"They are doing the job that we are supposed to be doing—the people who claim to uphold international law. There should be a flotilla of Irish naval vessels standing up for those principles, not just a brave group of volunteers risking their lives without official support. A European force should be ensuring their safe passage—that is a legal and moral responsibility."
Shortly after the incident, Cunningham took to social media to express outrage over the handling of the situation.
“The Freedom Flotilla was attacked during the night. The ship was rammed, boarded, and the 12 volunteers kidnapped. This is more reprehensible behaviour from the genocidal regime in Tel Aviv,” he wrote.
McGregor, known for his brash online persona, responded by mocking Cunningham, saying:
“I thought you were on this boat, Liamo. What happened? Forgot your goggles? Get sea sick off the gargle? Bottler.”
Cunningham fired back, replying:
“Didn’t know you could read and write, Conor. Thought you used your hands to tap out.”
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition issued a strong statement, alleging that the ship was “unlawfully boarded” and that its crew had been “kidnapped by Israeli forces.”
“The unarmed civilian crew was abducted, and its life-saving cargo—including baby formula, food, and medical supplies—was confiscated,” the coalition said.
The incident has further fueled international criticism of Israel’s blockade of Gaza and sparked renewed debate over the role of international actors in responding to the humanitarian emergency in the region.
