Elderly Cancer Patient Abandoned Amid Garbage in Mumbai’s Aarey Colony; Police Launch Investigation

In a distressing incident that has sparked outrage across Mumbai, an elderly woman suffering from cancer was discovered abandoned amidst piles of garbage in Aarey Colony, Goregaon, during the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to official sources, Mumbai Police received a tip-off via the control room, reporting that an elderly woman had been left unattended among heaps of decaying waste and plastic debris. Responding swiftly, officers reached the location and found the woman—believed to be in her late 60s or early 70s—lying in a frail state, dressed in a pink nightdress and visibly battling illness.

The woman’s condition revealed clear signs of severe medical neglect. Her face bore advanced, untreated wounds, including a festering infection on her cheeks and nose, consistent with complications from skin cancer. The police immediately arranged for medical assistance, initially transporting her to Jogeshwari Trauma Care Centre, followed by Cooper Hospital. However, both facilities reportedly declined admission, citing inadequate resources to handle her critical condition.

After nearly eight hours of persistent efforts by the police, Cooper Hospital admitted the woman around 5:30 PM the same day.

During initial inquiries, the woman identified herself as Yashoda Gaikwad, a resident of Malad. In a shocking revelation, she alleged that her own grandson had driven her to Aarey Colony and abandoned her there.

To verify her identity and locate her family, police teams visited addresses in Malad and Kandivli, though no one has yet confirmed her background. Authorities have since circulated her photograph across various police stations and initiated a thorough review of CCTV footage from the vicinity to trace those responsible.

The incident has raised serious questions about elder care and abandonment, particularly involving vulnerable patients suffering from life-threatening illnesses. The investigation is ongoing.
