Russia Launches Devastating Aerial Assault on Kyiv Following Strategic Bombing of Russian Airbases

Kyiv, Ukraine — At least four people were killed and dozens injured after Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone assault on the Ukrainian capital overnight, in one of the most intense aerial bombardments in recent weeks. Ukrainian officials reported that residential areas across Kyiv were struck, setting buildings ablaze and disrupting the city's transport systems.

The overnight attack came in apparent retaliation after Ukrainian intelligence operatives carried out a daring sabotage mission last weekend, destroying several Russian strategic bombers on the ground using quadcopter drones hidden in wooden sheds.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the current death toll stands at four, though the number may rise as emergency workers continue search operations through the debris of collapsed structures. At least 20 people sustained injuries, with 16 requiring hospitalisation.

Authorities said that Russia's combined strike included a volley of kamikaze drones and Kalibr cruise missiles. The attack resulted in fires in multiple districts of Kyiv and caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure. The capital’s military administration reported that one missile had hit a train operating between metro stations, leading to a temporary suspension of subway services.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, confirmed that drones had struck the upper floors of a high-rise apartment complex in the Darnytskyi district on the eastern side of the city, triggering a major fire and prompting emergency power outages. Another blaze was reported in a residential building in a western district, while drone debris was found across at least three districts of Kyiv.

As the assault unfolded, the distinct buzz of incoming drones was heard across the city, followed by Ukrainian anti-aircraft fire. Residents reported a series of powerful explosions that shook windows and lit up the night sky, with at least one significant fire breaking out at a drone impact site.

Many Kyiv residents sought refuge in underground car parks and metro stations as sirens wailed across the capital.

The Kremlin’s response follows a warning issued by Russian President Vladimir Putin, relayed via U.S. President Donald Trump, that Moscow would retaliate following the destruction of Russian bombers deep inside its territory. The Ukrainian drone raids have been seen as a bold escalation in the conflict, directly targeting key components of Russia’s long-range strike capability.

As rescue and emergency teams continue operations in Kyiv, Ukrainian officials warn that further attacks are likely in the days ahead, as the war enters a new and increasingly volatile phase.
