A Ryanair flight arriving from London Stansted made a tense landing at Kalamata International Airport in southern Greece on Wednesday, after reportedly encountering severe turbulence mid-flight and subsequently striking a barrier on the runway.
The Boeing 737 aircraft, operating the scheduled service to Kalamata, landed safely following a turbulent descent. However, passengers onboard reported hearing a “loud banging sound” moments after touchdown, as the aircraft's wingtip collided with a fence while taxiing toward the stand. Images circulated on social media show visible damage to one of the aircraft’s wings.
According to passengers, the crew had advised of a potentially “bumpy landing” in advance. The situation escalated when, following the collision, an onboard announcement instructed passengers to remain seated while awaiting the arrival of the airport fire brigade. This precaution, while standard in such scenarios, reportedly caused distress among travelers, many of whom feared a possible fire due to the extent of the wing damage.
A passenger quoted by The Sun described the moment of impact: “As we taxied down the runway, the plane suddenly turned and everyone heard this loud banging sound. You could feel the impact. Then they told us to wait for the fire brigade. People were scared—there was clear concern about fire risk given the condition of the wing.”
In an official statement issued to The Mirror, Ryanair confirmed the incident, stating:
“This flight from London Stansted to Kalamata (18 June) was taxiing to stand when the wingtip came into contact with a fence at Kalamata Airport. The aircraft subsequently continued to stand, and passengers disembarked normally. The aircraft then underwent the required inspections and maintenance prior to its return to service.”
No injuries were reported, and all passengers disembarked without further incident. The aircraft remains under inspection in accordance with regulatory and safety protocols.
