Gardaà are investigating a shooting in County Carlow, Ireland this evening that left one person dead and a child injured.
Details of the incident are unclear, but it is believed that a man fired several shots at the Tesco supermarket in the Fairgreen shopping centre at around 6.15pm. One person was fatally injured during the incident, with some reports suggesting that the gunshot wounds were self-inflicted. A boy was also injured, but it is not yet clear if there were any other gunshots or other injuries as people fled the scene.
The child was taken to hospital for treatment. The injuries are not said to be life-threatening. Police forces in Ireland have evacuated the Garda shopping centre and sealed off the scene. They are also carrying out an extensive security check in the area.
The Army bomb disposal team has also been deployed as a precaution as Gardaà are concerned that the attacker may have been carrying an explosive device. The body of the deceased remains at the scene but will not be removed until the area is declared safe. Gardaà said there is no further concern for public safety.
They have urged people not to share recorded footage of the incident on social media and to hand it over to Gardaà at Carlow Garda Station. Witnesses or anyone with information are urged to contact Carlow Garda Station on 059-9136620 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
