Thane Engineer Arrested for Espionage Linked to Pakistani Intelligence Network

Mumbai, June 6: In a case that has raised serious concerns over national security, a 27-year-old engineer from Thane, Ravindra Verma, has been arrested for allegedly sharing classified information related to Indian naval assets with a Pakistani intelligence operative.

According to the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Verma, who was employed with a defence technology firm and had access to the Naval Dockyard in South Mumbai, was allegedly honey-trapped by a Pakistani agent posing as a woman on Facebook. The investigation revealed that Verma knowingly and repeatedly transmitted sensitive information regarding Indian warships and submarines in exchange for financial compensation.

The ATS stated that Verma provided critical data through sketches, diagrams, and audio messages. He is also believed to have disclosed the names and other operational details of specific warships and submarines. Funds were reportedly transferred to him from multiple bank accounts based in India and abroad.

Given his role, Verma had the opportunity to board naval ships and submarines—access he allegedly exploited to gather and leak the classified material.

On June 5, a Thane court remanded Verma to 14-day judicial custody. His arrest follows a recent string of espionage-related detentions, including several individuals from digital media platforms who are under investigation for alleged links to Pakistani intelligence services.

The developments come amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam. In retaliation, India conducted precision airstrikes targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in the early hours of May 7. Pakistan responded with attempted attacks on Indian military bases between May 8 and 10, which were met with strong retaliatory action from Indian forces. These countermeasures reportedly inflicted significant damage on critical Pakistani military installations, including air bases, radar facilities, and command centres.

Hostilities between the two nations de-escalated after both sides agreed to a mutual cessation of aggression on May 10.
