The 'most brutal Indian dentist in the UK' practiced in Ireland under different names

The most brutal Indian doctor from Kerala state, in the UK has been caught after practicing in Ireland under a different name.

The 'most brutal Indian dentist in the UK' practiced in Galway and Cork under different names. Dr. Rajesh Narendranath practiced under the name 'Raj Nair'.

A dentist branded "Britain's rudest dentist" after being kicked out of the UK for endangering patient safety is now practising in Galway under a different name, an investigation by the Irish Mirror has found.

Dr Rajesh Narendranath was removed from the UK dental register in 2013 following serious complaints, including allegations that a patient suffering from cancer and multiple sclerosis deliberately damaged his mouth during a procedure. The same patient alleged that he made rude remarks and behaved in an unprofessional manner.

In a rare move, the Parliamentary and Health Services Ombudsman (PHSO) submitted a report on the complaint to the UK Parliament in June 2011, stating that he had failed to comply with recommendations and concerns about patient safety. Despite this, Dr Narendranath currently runs his own practice in Loughrea, Galway, and has also worked at a dental surgery in Cork, where he is listed as "Dr. Raj Nair", the Irish newspaper reports.

He registered the business name Lakeshore Dental in 2013, the same year he was deported from the UK. Since then, he has continued to work under the name Raj Nair, including giving talks at conferences and featuring in the Irish Dental Association's journal. However, Irish dentists are legally obliged to practice under the name listed on the Dental Council's register, which is recorded as "Rajesh Narendranath". After the Irish Mirror reported the use of the alternative name to the Dental Council, an investigation was launched. As part of this, the council contacted the practice and removed his photo and name from its website the following day. The clinic did not respond to queries from the Irish Mirror.

The Dental Council was already aware of the UK procedures and the removal of Dr Narendranath from the British register. It had considered the matter and decided that he was fit to practice dentistry in Ireland.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Dr Narendranath said: “I had been practising in Ireland before I was dismissed in 2013 and I disclosed that to the Dental Council of Ireland as required.” He added: “After the investigation, the Irish Dental Council took no action and there is a long documentary trail for that. I bet you won’t print that.”

He said of using the name “Raj Nair”: “The thousands of patients he treats in Ireland “can’t even pronounce my full name”, so he decided to shorten it. “Nair is my family name and religious name, and I have the right to use it.” However, the Dental Council has made it clear that while some practitioners are shortening their names, the main concern is to remain clearly identifiable.

Registrar David O'Flynn said: "The Dental Council is currently investigating the matter to ensure that the relevant provisions of the Dentists Act 1985 are being complied with." Dr Narendranath graduated from the University of Kerala in 1997, moved to the UK in 1999 and later gained a postgraduate degree in restorative dentistry from the Leeds Dental Institute. He worked in a number of places, including Belfast, before buying a dental practice in Staffordshire in 2006. The patient complaint that led to his dismissal is that he allegedly refused to treat a patient in 2007 and told her to leave.

When the local Primary Care Trust (PCT) was contacted, they responded: “She has complained about me to the PCT!! Who should I complain to about this patient?”

A healthcare commission later recommended that Dr Narendranath apologise in five areas and provide assurances on future care. However, it was his refusal to apologise or follow guidelines from professional bodies that ultimately led to his dismissal.
