Togo Suspends RFI and France 24 Broadcasts Over Alleged Bias

Togo’s communications authority has suspended the broadcasts of French state-funded international news channels RFI and France 24 for a period of three months, citing what it described as a lack of journalistic impartiality and factual accuracy.

In a statement released Monday, the authority accused the two outlets of airing "inaccurate, tendentious, and even factually incorrect" content that it claimed undermined the stability of the country’s republican institutions and damaged Togo’s international image.

The suspension comes amid growing political tensions following constitutional reforms in May that granted President Faure Gnassingbé sweeping new powers. Under the amended constitution, Gnassingbé was appointed President of the Council of Ministers—a role with no fixed term limit. Opposition parties, including the Democratic Forces for the Republic and the National Alliance for Change, have condemned the move as a “constitutional coup,” alleging it paves the way for lifelong rule.

Both RFI and France 24 have covered ongoing opposition protests in response to the constitutional changes, drawing the ire of the Togolese government.

In a joint response, the two broadcasters reaffirmed their commitment to professional journalism and editorial independence. They also expressed willingness to engage with Togolese authorities to address any concerns and clarify misunderstandings.
