Trump Seeks 'Real and Lasting End' to Israel-Iran Conflict, Dismisses Ceasefire as Insufficient

Washington, D.C., June 17 — President Donald Trump on Tuesday asserted that the United States is aiming for more than a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Iran, instead pushing for a "real and lasting end" to hostilities.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump clarified his administration’s position, stating, “We’re looking for better than a ceasefire—an end. Not a pause, but a real end.” The president’s remarks came amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and growing international calls for de-escalation.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump denied any backchannel communications with Tehran, stating unequivocally that he had not engaged Iran in peace negotiations "in any way, shape, or form." He further criticized Iran for failing to accept what he described as a favorable deal previously offered by the United States.

Trump also addressed speculation surrounding his early departure from the G7 Summit in Canada. While French President Emmanuel Macron suggested the move was linked to ceasefire efforts, Trump refuted this claim. "Wrong! He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a ceasefire," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Much bigger than that. Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay tuned!"

In response to Macron’s comments labeling the U.S. President’s exit as a “positive move” in support of peace, Trump dismissed the French leader’s statement as inaccurate and “publicity-seeking.”

The White House had earlier announced that Trump would leave the G7 Summit a day early to address what it called an “urgent” and “escalating” crisis in the Middle East.

Shortly after, in a dramatic statement, President Trump urged all U.S. citizens and foreign nationals to "immediately evacuate Tehran," citing escalating security concerns. He reiterated his firm stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, declaring, “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” and called the ongoing situation “a shame.”

The administration has not yet released additional details on the next steps the U.S. may take, but Trump’s statements suggest a broader strategic initiative may be underway beyond mere conflict mediation.
