Delhi Woman and Her Lover Arrested for Murdering Husband, Staging Death as Electrocution Accident

NEW DELHI – In a disturbing case of betrayal and premeditated murder, a 36-year-old man in Delhi, initially believed to have died from accidental electrocution, was allegedly killed by his wife and her lover—his own cousin. The shocking truth emerged after police uncovered incriminating messages exchanged between the two accused, revealing a detailed plot to drug and murder the victim.

The deceased, identified as Karan Dev, was admitted to Mata Rooprani Maggo Hospital on July 13 by his wife, Sushmita, who claimed he had suffered a fatal electric shock at home. His death was presumed accidental, and his family initially declined a post-mortem examination.

However, police, suspicious due to Karan’s relatively young age and the circumstances surrounding his death, insisted on a forensic autopsy. The body was transferred to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in Harinagar for further examination, despite objections from Sushmita and her alleged accomplice—Karan’s cousin, Rahul.

A Family Member Raises Alarm

Three days after Karan’s death, his younger brother, Kunal, approached authorities with serious allegations. He claimed his brother had been murdered and provided police with Instagram chat logs between Sushmita and Rahul, which reportedly detailed the murder plan.

Chats Reveal Chilling Plot

According to the conversations accessed by investigators, the duo had conspired to kill Karan by mixing 15 sleeping pills into his food on the night of July 12. Once he became unconscious, they planned to stage an accidental death by electrocution.

When the drugs did not take immediate effect, Sushmita began panicking and turned to Rahul for instructions. "Check how long it takes to die after taking the medicine. It’s been three hours, and he’s still breathing,” she wrote, as cited in reports.

Rahul suggested: “If you can’t figure anything out, give him a shock.”

Further exchanges between the two revealed a continued effort to hasten Karan’s death. Sushmita asked how to restrain him, to which Rahul responded, “With tape.” As Karan lay semi-conscious, she messaged that she couldn’t force his mouth open to administer more pills. “You come here, maybe together we can manage,” she texted.

According to the police, the final act involved administering an electric shock to simulate an accidental electrocution. After the act, Sushmita allegedly informed Karan’s family that he had suffered a fatal shock, prompting them to rush him to the hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Arrests and Confession

Once the digital evidence was reviewed, both Sushmita and Rahul were taken into custody. During interrogation, Sushmita reportedly confessed to the crime, admitting she had plotted the murder with Rahul, citing repeated domestic abuse and financial harassment by her husband as motives.

“She claimed that Karan had slapped and abused her a day before Karwa Chauth and frequently demanded money from her, causing her mental and physical distress,” an investigating officer said.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are awaiting a detailed post-mortem report to corroborate the timeline and manner of death.

“Based on preliminary findings, arrests have been made, and further legal proceedings are underway,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka), Ankit Singh.

This tragic case adds to growing concerns about domestic violence, familial betrayal, and the misuse of digital platforms in orchestrating serious crimes.
