Injury to Rishabh Pant May Pave Way for Ishan Kishan’s Test Comeback

An unfortunate injury to wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant during the fourth Test against England in Manchester could potentially open the door for Ishan Kishan’s return to India’s Test squad. According to reports, Pant sustained a toe fracture after being struck on the right foot while batting on Day 1 of the match.

Pant, who was on 37 at the time, attempted a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes but inside-edged the delivery onto his foot. He was visibly in pain and had to be driven off the field in a buggy. Medical assessments have advised six weeks of rest, making his participation for the remainder of the match—and possibly the series—highly unlikely.

Selection Committee Eyes Ishan Kishan for Fifth Test

As per The Indian Express, the selectors are expected to draft wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan into the squad for the fifth and final Test, scheduled to begin on July 31 at The Oval. Kishan’s inclusion could bolster India’s options behind the stumps as the team grapples with a growing list of injuries.

Injury Concerns Mount for Team India

Pant’s injury adds to an already troubling fitness crisis within the Indian camp. Fast bowlers Akash Deep (groin) and Arshdeep Singh (finger) are nursing injuries, while all-rounder Nitish Reddy has been ruled out of the tour due to a knee injury.

This marks Pant’s second injury in as many Tests on this tour, following a finger injury sustained during the Lord’s Test, which had already forced him to relinquish wicketkeeping duties to Dhruv Jurel.

Ishan vs. Jurel: Who Gets the Nod?

While Jurel remains the backup wicketkeeper in the current squad, Ishan Kishan is also expected to join the team in England. Kishan has been active in red-ball cricket, recently featuring in two County Championship matches for Nottinghamshire, where he scored two half-centuries and was involved in five dismissals.

A Comeback After Exile?

Kishan made his Test debut during India’s tour of the West Indies in 2023, where he registered a half-century in the two-match series, which India won 1-0. Later that year, Kishan took a break from the game citing mental fatigue and skipped domestic duties for Jharkhand. This led to the BCCI excluding him from its central contracts list.

His last international appearance came in a T20I series against Australia in November 2023. If selected, the upcoming Test at The Oval could mark a significant chapter in Kishan’s return to the national fold.
