Ireland Poised for Warm and Settled Bank Holiday Weekend as High Pressure Builds

Dublin, July 28 — Ireland is on track to enjoy a final burst of summer sunshine over the upcoming bank holiday weekend, with forecasters pointing to a dominant area of high pressure set to bring warm and settled conditions across much of the country.

According to Met Éireann, high pressure will begin to take hold from Friday, potentially pushing daytime temperatures into the low to mid-20s throughout the long weekend. This marks a welcome change as summer nears its close, with drier and more stable weather also forecast to continue into early next week.

Independent weather analyst Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather has been tracking a developing pocket of warm air via social media, noting that it’s likely to move “close to or over” Ireland in time for the holiday. “Some positive signs of high pressure and warmer air to move close to or over Ireland to start August,” O’Reilly posted. “Remember, August is still summer when it comes to meteorological seasons.” While he predicted mainly settled conditions for the weekend, he added that the amount of sunshine remains uncertain, with the possibility of isolated showers.

Short-Term Forecast Overview:

Sunday:
Today will be largely cloudy across the country, with scattered showers moving in from the west and longer spells of rain developing in the north. Some brighter intervals will emerge by evening as conditions gradually improve. Daytime highs will range between 16°C and 21°C, with moderate westerly winds, occasionally fresher along northern coasts.

Tonight will begin mostly dry with clear spells and only a few scattered showers, primarily in the north. Cloud will increase from the west, bringing light rain or drizzle near Atlantic coastal areas. Overnight temperatures will dip to between 9°C and 14°C, in light westerly breezes.

Monday:
A largely overcast start is expected, with scattered showers spreading from the west. Sunny intervals will develop, particularly in the northeast and east. Rain and drizzle will move into the west and northwest by late afternoon and evening. Maximum temperatures will range from 17°C to 21°C, accompanied by light to moderate westerly winds.

Monday night will see some clear spells early on, but cloud will dominate as outbreaks of rain arrive from the west, heaviest in northern areas. It will be a mild night, with temperatures remaining between 13°C and 16°C. Light to moderate west or southwest winds will prevail, and some mist and fog patches may form.

Tuesday:
The day will begin dull and damp, with widespread light rain. However, conditions will gradually improve, with drier periods and isolated showers developing later, along with some sunny breaks. Temperatures will climb to between 17°C and 22°C in moderate westerly to northwesterly winds.

Overnight, expect a mostly dry sky with variable cloud cover and occasional light drizzle. Lows will range from 10°C to 15°C in predominantly light northwest breezes.

Wednesday:
A mix of sunshine and cloud is forecast, alongside well-scattered showers. Temperatures will remain seasonably warm, peaking between 17°C and 22°C, with light to moderate northwesterly or westerly winds.
