A major incident has been declared after a school coach carrying approximately 60 to 70 passengers was involved in a serious crash on the A396 Cutcombe Hill near Minehead, Somerset. The vehicle, which was returning from a day trip, was en route to Minehead Middle School when the incident occurred at around 3:15 p.m. on Thursday.
Emergency services, including Avon and Somerset Police, responded promptly to the scene between Wheddon Cross and Timbercombe. Several individuals sustained injuries and have been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The exact number and severity of the injuries have not yet been confirmed.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police stated:
“We understand the coach was transporting approximately 60 to 70 individuals, believed to be pupils from Minehead Middle School. A number of casualties have been taken to hospital. The majority of passengers have been safely relocated to a rest centre in Wheddon Cross, and we are working closely with the school to assist with their safe return. Officers are also present at the school to support parents and staff. We ask parents to proceed to the school for further information.”
Minehead Middle School, which serves students aged 9 to 14, is just days away from the end of term.
Peter Prior-Sankey, director of local coach operator Ridlers, confirmed the vehicle involved belonged to the company:
“We were made aware of an incident involving one of our 70-seater coaches this afternoon. The vehicle was transporting a group of schoolchildren returning from a day trip. We are in close communication with the school and emergency services to fully understand the circumstances. Our primary concern remains the wellbeing of the passengers and our driver. The entire Ridlers team is deeply concerned and anxiously awaiting further updates.”
Eyewitnesses described the scene as deeply distressing. One local resident, who lives near the crash site and wished to remain anonymous, said:
“The coach went down a steep slope — it's a large vehicle and the area doesn’t have barriers. It’s hard to comprehend such an incident happening here. I feel devastated for those children and everyone involved.”
The A396 remains closed as emergency personnel continue their response and investigation. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
Rachel Gilmour, MP for Tiverton and Minehead, addressed the incident via social media:
“I have heard news about a distressing road traffic incident around Wheddon Cross this afternoon. Emergency services are present, so please allow them the space to work. My thoughts are with all involved.”
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander also issued a statement on X:
“I am aware of the serious incident involving a bus near Minehead, Somerset. My thoughts are with all those affected. Emergency services are on site, and I am receiving regular updates on the situation.”
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Authorities continue to work with the school, families, and emergency teams to manage the aftermath of this tragic event.
