Top sources within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have confirmed to CNN-News18 that the next Vice President of India will be selected from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ending speculation around a potential consensus candidate from among alliance partners.
According to senior coalition insiders, the candidate under consideration will be someone with a deep ideological alignment with the BJP and significant experience in parliamentary affairs. The party is seeking a leader who can not only uphold the dignity of the office but also play a pivotal role in advancing the government's legislative priorities in the Rajya Sabha, where the Vice President serves as Chairperson.
Insiders also revealed that multiple factors are being taken into account in the selection process, given the full five-year term of the incoming Vice President. The emphasis, sources say, is on identifying a figure who can seamlessly balance constitutional responsibilities with strategic legislative engagement.
Dismissing ongoing speculation, a senior NDA official clarified that leaders from the Janata Dal (United), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), or any other NDA constituents are not being considered for the post. “Reports suggesting that JD(U) or other allies are in the running are entirely baseless. All alliance partners are fully aligned with the BJP’s decision-making on this matter,” the source said.
Deliberations on the final nominee are expected to resume following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from his overseas tour.
This development follows the unexpected resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, whose abrupt departure sent shockwaves through political circles. While the precise reasons for his resignation remain undisclosed, party insiders suggest that it prompted an immediate push within the NDA to unify behind a successor who embodies the BJP’s vision for the next phase of governance.
