Puri, Odisha | July 18 — A 15-year-old girl sustained critical burn injuries after she was allegedly set ablaze by three unidentified individuals in the Boiabara area of Puri district on Friday morning, officials confirmed.
The incident reportedly occurred around 8:30 a.m. while the victim, a Class 12 student, was returning home from school. According to local sources, the assailants confronted the girl on the roadside and attempted to set her on fire. Alerted by her screams, nearby residents rushed to the spot, extinguished the flames, and immediately transported her to a local healthcare centre.
The victim was later referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar, where she is undergoing treatment for burn injuries covering more than 70 percent of her body, according to hospital sources.
Balanga Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter. Authorities have yet to ascertain the identities of the suspects or determine a clear motive behind the attack.
Condemning the incident, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who also oversees the Women and Child Development portfolio, issued a strong statement. “I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn that a 15-year-old girl was set on fire by miscreants in Balanga. She has been shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced medical care, and the state government will bear all expenses related to her treatment. I have instructed the police to identify and arrest the culprits without delay and to take stringent action,” she said.
Officials have assured that further steps will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
