Barabanki/Haridwar, July 28: At least two people were killed and several others injured in a tragic incident at the Awsaneshwar Mahadev Temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki on Monday morning. The mishap occurred when an overhead electric wire, disturbed by monkeys, snapped and fell onto a tin shed, resulting in multiple devotees receiving electric shocks during a heavy rush for darshan on the third Monday of the holy month of Sawan.
According to District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi, around 19 devotees came in contact with the live wire. “Some monkeys had jumped onto the electric wires, which led to the wire falling on the tin shed. Nineteen people sustained electric shocks; two are in critical condition,” he stated.
The injured were promptly shifted to the Trivediganj Community Health Centre (CHC), while five were referred to higher medical facilities due to the severity of their condition. Authorities confirmed that the situation is now under control.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and directed officials to ensure swift relief measures and proper medical treatment for the injured. The Chief Minister’s Office released a statement instructing local authorities to reach the site immediately and expedite the relief operations.
In a separate incident on Sunday, a stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, claimed eight lives and left 30 injured. The tragedy unfolded along a stairway leading to the hilltop temple, where a large crowd of pilgrims had gathered. Panic broke out following rumours of an electric current near the staircase, triggering a stampede.
Haridwar’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Pramendra Singh Dobal, confirmed the cause of the panic and the subsequent chaos. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
The Mansa Devi temple, located atop the Shivalik hills at an elevation of over 500 feet, witnessed an overwhelming influx of devotees due to the Sawan festivities. Videos from the scene showed massive crowds, including women and children, struggling at the temple entrance and outside hospitals, with anxious relatives waiting for information about their loved ones.
