New Delhi, July 22: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation on Monday evening, citing health concerns, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure just two years after assuming office. The resignation, submitted to President Droupadi Murmu, comes into immediate effect under Article 67(a) of the Constitution.
In his letter, the 74-year-old statesman wrote: “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately.” Dhankhar had undergone an angioplasty earlier this year at AIIMS, New Delhi, and had been under continued medical observation. Though he had resumed public engagements, occasional signs of fatigue were noted during recent appearances.
President Droupadi Murmu has formally accepted his resignation, and the communication has been forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs. An official notification is expected shortly.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Dhankhar’s decades-long service to the nation, highlighting his contributions across various constitutional and public roles—most notably as the Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister wished Dhankhar continued good health and acknowledged his unwavering commitment to public life.
Dhankhar, who assumed office in August 2022, was due to complete his term in 2027. His tenure as Rajya Sabha Chairman was marked by high-voltage debates and procedural challenges. Notably, he was at the centre of a rare political confrontation when sections of the Opposition attempted to initiate an impeachment motion—a first in independent India. The motion was subsequently dismissed by Deputy Chairman Harivansh.
Dhankhar’s resignation coincides with the commencement of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, adding a layer of political intrigue and speculation. As the nation awaits the announcement of his successor, his departure is being seen as both sudden and significant in the context of ongoing legislative dynamics.
