Srinagar — The Amarnath Yatra via the Baltal Axis has been temporarily suspended due to heavy rainfall and resulting unsafe conditions, prompting urgent repair and maintenance work on the route. The suspension, aimed at ensuring pilgrim safety, will remain in effect through August 1 and 2, with the Yatra expected to resume on August 3, subject to weather and trail conditions.
In an official statement, Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, confirmed that no pilgrimage will be permitted on the Baltal route on August 3 either, citing ongoing maintenance and the need for further safety assessments.
“Due to recent heavy rains, essential repair and maintenance work is being carried out on the Baltal Axis of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra route. In the interest of yatri safety, no Yatra will be allowed from the Baltal route on August 3. Further updates will be issued in due course,” he stated.
Both Yatra Routes Affected
The inclement weather has impacted both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. Authorities had already initiated repair operations on the Pahalgam axis earlier this week following similar damage caused by intense rain.
Officials have emphasized that the suspension is strictly precautionary, prioritizing the well-being and safety of all pilgrims amid adverse weather conditions.
Robust Turnout Despite Disruptions
Despite intermittent disruptions, this year’s Amarnath Yatra has witnessed a strong turnout. According to official figures, over 4.05 lakh devotees have undertaken the pilgrimage to the Holy Cave Shrine of Shri Amarnathji, reflecting a significant level of participation in the ongoing season.
Pilgrims and stakeholders are advised to stay tuned to official bulletins for updates regarding the reopening of routes and further advisories.
