New Delhi — In the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement imposing a 25% tariff on Indian imports starting August 1, India has reaffirmed the strength and resilience of its strategic partnership with the United States.
At a weekly media briefing on Friday, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated New Delhi’s commitment to its relationship with Washington, describing it as a “comprehensive global strategic partnership” grounded in shared democratic values, mutual interests, and strong people-to-people ties.
“This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges. We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to, and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward,” Jaiswal said.
Defence Ties Highlighted Amid Trade Friction
Jaiswal also highlighted the deepening defence collaboration between the two nations, stating:
“We have a strong defence partnership with the U.S., which has been consistently strengthening over the last several years. There is significant potential for further growth under the India-U.S. COMPACT for the 21st century.”
The MEA’s remarks come just a day after President Trump, via his social media platform Truth Social, announced the new tariff policy, citing India’s high tariffs, non-monetary trade barriers, and strategic military and energy ties with Russia as key reasons for the move. He also hinted at additional penalties in the future, though specifics remain undisclosed.
India Rules Out Concessions on Core Sectors
Despite the announcement, senior Indian government sources have made it clear that New Delhi will not offer concessions on sensitive sectors such as agriculture, dairy, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
“The interests of our farmers are non-negotiable. The government is firm — we will not come under pressure,” a top official said.
Officials added that the economic impact of the 25% tariff is expected to be marginal, with India’s export exposure in affected categories being limited.
“There is no question of allowing genetically modified crop imports or compromising the interests of domestic producers,” a source added.
Strategic Focus Despite Disagreement
While the trade friction adds a layer of complexity to the bilateral equation, officials in both capitals are expected to continue engagement on broader strategic issues, including defence, technology, and regional security.
India’s calibrated response signals a continued emphasis on long-term strategic alignment with the United States, even as trade negotiations face new headwinds under President Trump’s renewed protectionist posture.
