Chennai: The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has carried out searches across multiple locations in Chennai and Dindigul district, targeting premises linked to I. Periyasamy, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Panchayat Raj and Rural Development, his son and Palani MLA I. P. Senthil Kumar, and other family members under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, officials confirmed on Monday.
According to the ED, the August 16 operation led to the seizure of property and investment-related documents from the residences of Senthil Kumar and Periyasamy’s daughter, P. Indra, as well as from the office premises of Irulappa Mills India Pvt. Ltd., where Periyasamy and his younger son, P. Prabhu, serve as directors.
“The search team also uncovered certain shell companies being operated from the premises of Irulappa Mills India Pvt. Ltd. The accounts of these entities are being scrutinised, and digital devices seized during the raid are under forensic examination,” the agency said in an official statement.
Background of the Case
The investigation stems from a disproportionate assets case registered by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) for the period 2006–2010, when Periyasamy held the portfolio of Minister for Revenue and Prisons. The DVAC charge sheet alleged that Periyasamy and his family amassed disproportionate assets worth approximately ₹2 crore.
Although a special court in Dindigul had discharged Periyasamy and his family, the Madras High Court overturned the order in April 2025 and directed a trial. However, the Supreme Court stayed the trial proceedings before the special court on August 18, pending further consideration.
Political Reactions
Following the raids, the ruling DMK criticised the ED’s action, alleging that it was politically motivated and orchestrated by the BJP-led Union government.
The ED stated that further investigation is ongoing.
