New Delhi: Several schools in the capital were evacuated on Sunday after fresh bomb threat emails were received, marking yet another in a string of similar incidents that have unsettled the city in recent months.
According to officials, Delhi Public School (DPS) Dwarka, Modern Convent School, and ShreeRam World School in Sector 10, Dwarka, were among the institutions that received the threats. Police, bomb disposal squads, and the Delhi Fire Service were immediately deployed, and thorough searches of the premises were initiated.
“All students and staff have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. Search operations are underway,” a Delhi Police officer confirmed.
The latest scare comes just weeks after a massive security response was triggered on July 18, when over 50 schools across Delhi received bomb threat emails in a single morning. Prominent institutions, including St Xavier’s in Civil Lines, Richmond Global School in Paschim Vihar, Abhinav Public School in Rohini, and The Sovereign School in Rohini, were among those affected.
Earlier in July, St Stephen’s College and St Thomas School in Dwarka had also been targeted, following three other similar hoax threats the day before. In fact, at least seven schools were hit with emails on July 17 — the third consecutive day of such threats.
Police investigations later revealed that one of the threats had been sent by a 12-year-old boy from south Delhi as a prank. He was questioned, counselled, and released to his parents.
Though every threat so far has turned out to be a hoax, the repeated incidents have caused significant alarm among parents and school administrations. Former Delhi chief minister and AAP leader Atishi recently criticised the Centre and the BJP-led civic authorities, stating:
“Think of the trauma that children, parents and teachers would be going through. BJP controls all four engines of governance in Delhi, and is yet not able to provide any safety or security to our children! Shocking!”
Officials reiterated that precautionary evacuations will continue to be the standard protocol until each threat is fully verified. Meanwhile, an investigation is underway to trace the origin of the latest email received by DPS Dwarka.
