Kolkata is set to take a major step forward in urban connectivity as Metro Railway announced on Sunday that the city’s airport will soon be linked to the metro network. The 6.77 km stretch of the Yellow Line between Noapara and Jai Hind Bimanbandar (airport) is scheduled to commence operations next week.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar section of the Yellow Line on August 22, alongside the Sealdah–Esplanade section of the Green Line and the Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing)–Beleghata section of the Orange Line.
The newly commissioned Yellow Line extension will feature four stations — Noapara, Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore Road, and Jai Hind Bimanbandar. A Metro Railway spokesperson noted that the service will significantly ease access to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, offering passengers a faster and more comfortable alternative to road travel.
Built at a cost of approximately ₹1,866 crore, the project includes three new stations equipped with state-of-the-art passenger amenities. Jessore Road station is the only surface-level station on this stretch, while Noapara and Dum Dum Cantonment stations are elevated, and the Jai Hind Bimanbandar station has been constructed underground.
Residents of Baranagar, Tobin Road, Sinthee, Dum Dum, Nagerbazar, Kaikhali More, and nearby areas will particularly benefit from the new connectivity, with seamless interchange options at Noapara for journeys on the Blue Line towards Kavi Subhash. Dum Dum Cantonment’s proximity to the Sealdah–Bongaon section of Eastern Railway further enhances accessibility.
The Metro authority confirmed that the stations will feature adequate ticket counters, seating arrangements, elevators, and other modern facilities to ensure passenger convenience.
