IndiGo Imposes Flying Ban on Passenger Following Mid-Air Assault Incident

MUMBAI/KOLKATA, August 3 — IndiGo Airlines has imposed a no-fly ban on a passenger involved in a mid-air assault aboard flight 6E138 from Mumbai to Kolkata, following a disturbing incident in which a co-traveller was slapped while experiencing a panic attack.

In an official statement released on Saturday, IndiGo confirmed the suspension of the accused passenger from flying on any of its flights, citing its strict policy against disruptive behavior.

"In line with our commitment to discourage such unruly conduct onboard, the individual has been suspended from flying with IndiGo, in accordance with regulatory provisions," the airline stated.
"We remain dedicated to ensuring a safe, respectful, and comfortable environment for all passengers and crew. We appreciate your continued trust."

The Incident

The victim, identified as Hussain Ahmed Majumdar from Cachar district in Assam, reportedly suffered a panic attack mid-flight on Friday and requested to be deboarded, according to The Hindu. As two cabin crew members were assisting him, a fellow passenger seated in the aisle — later identified as Hafijul Rahaman — suddenly assaulted him, slapping him in front of other passengers.

A video of the incident, captured by another traveller, quickly went viral on social media. It shows a visibly distressed Majumdar being guided by crew members when he is unexpectedly struck by the accused.

Upon landing at Kolkata airport, Rahaman was immediately detained by security personnel and handed over to local police authorities.

Victim Reported Missing

In a concerning development, Majumdar has since been reported missing. According to The Times of India, he was scheduled to travel onward to Silchar but never arrived.
“When we didn’t find him on the Silchar flight, we contacted the local authorities and even approached the Udharband police station near Silchar airport,” a family member told the publication.

Authorities are currently investigating the matter further, while search efforts to locate Majumdar are underway.

The incident has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of in-flight conduct regulations, particularly in cases involving passengers experiencing medical or psychological distress.
