Mumbai, Aug. 19 — IndiGo Airlines on Tuesday issued a travel advisory for passengers departing from Mumbai, warning of delays caused by heavy rainfall and severe waterlogging across the city.
Several arterial routes leading to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport have been affected, resulting in sluggish traffic and operational disruptions. Passengers have been urged to check their flight status on the IndiGo app or website and plan additional travel time to the airport.
“With Mumbai drenched in heavy showers, several routes to the airport are witnessing waterlogging and sluggish traffic. This has led to operational challenges, with delays in both departures and arrivals. We truly regret the inconvenience this may cause. If you are scheduled to travel, we recommend leaving a little earlier and monitoring your flight status via our app or website,” the airline said in its advisory.
IndiGo added that its teams are “closely monitoring the situation and working diligently to minimise disruptions,” assuring travellers that passenger safety, comfort, and peace of mind remain its top priority.
IMD Issues Red Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Neighboring Thane and Raigad districts have also been placed under red alert, with forecasts of intense showers and high tides over the coming days.
Mumbai has already recorded 177 mm of rainfall within a span of six to eight hours, prompting concerns over flooding in low-lying areas.
State Government Response
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday cautioned residents about worsening weather conditions and urged citizens to remain vigilant.
“In the last two days, Maharashtra has received widespread rainfall. Red and Orange Alerts have been issued for several districts. Even for the next three days, until August 21, nearly half of the districts in Maharashtra remain under alert. We discussed the precautions that need to be taken in view of this situation,” Fadnavis said.
Authorities have appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution as the heavy downpour is expected to continue.
