Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has stirred controversy with remarks targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah, suggesting that his “head should be placed on the table” if illegal infiltration continues across India’s borders.
Speaking to the media in Nadia district, West Bengal, Moitra criticised the Centre, stating that responsibility for border security lies squarely with the Ministry of Home Affairs. She alleged that the rise in illegal immigration in border states like West Bengal reflects the Centre’s failure to act.
“If infiltration is happening, then the Home Minister’s head should be placed on the table. It is the Home Ministry’s responsibility to protect India’s borders,” Moitra said.
She further recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address from the Red Fort, where he had warned that unchecked infiltration was altering the country’s demographic balance. “If the Prime Minister himself says outsiders are eyeing our mothers, sisters and land, then who is responsible? It is not us, it is the Centre. The BSF is here. We live in fear of them. Bangladesh is our friend, but the situation has worsened in recent years because of your policies,” Moitra added.
The BJP’s Bengal unit reacted strongly, calling Moitra’s remarks a reflection of TMC’s frustration. In a post on social media platform X, the party accused the TMC of maligning Bengal’s image and promoting a culture of aggression that is dragging the state backwards.
National BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also condemned the comments, calling them “hateful and disgraceful.”
“This is not politics, it is hate speech. Mahua Moitra’s words are venomous, and they show how far Mamata Banerjee’s TMC has fallen,” he said in a statement.
The remarks have triggered a fresh political row in West Bengal, sharpening the already tense debate on border security and illegal immigration.
