Gujarat Congress MP Urges CM to Declare Cow as ‘State Mother’

Jhiniben Nagaji Thakor, the lone Congress MP from Gujarat, has written to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel urging that the cow be officially declared the “State Mother.”

In her letter, Thakor referred to the decision taken by the NDA government in Maharashtra last year, which recognised indigenous cow breeds as the “State Gomata”. She requested that Gujarat follow suit, highlighting the deep reverence accorded to the cow in society.

Thakor’s appeal also came in support of Devnath Bapu, a local religious leader from Kutch, who has been on a hunger strike since last week pressing for the same demand.

“After the meeting held in Rapar, Kutch under the leadership of several saints, mahants, national Hindu organisations, Bajrang Dal, and Devnath Bapu, letters were sent to 159 MLAs seeking this recognition. As no satisfactory response was received, Devnath Bapu and several saints have begun a hunger strike,” the MP wrote.

Citing the Maharashtra precedent, she added:

“As a Member of Parliament and a Congress representative, I urge you to declare the cow as the State Mother in Gujarat, just as was done in Maharashtra in September 2024.”

Thakor also noted that millions of people across India already worship the cow as Gomata, underlining its cultural and spiritual significance.

Meanwhile, Devnath Bapu continues his hunger strike at Ekal Dham in Kutch, keeping the issue in focus amid growing support from religious groups.
